What Is Thermographic Surveying?

Almost every serious electrical failure follows the same pattern: a connection loosens, resistance rises, heat builds — quietly, invisibly, sometimes for months — until something melts, arcs or catches fire. By the time a fault is visible or smellable, the damage is usually done.

Thermographic surveying uses an infrared camera to see that heat long before it becomes a crisis. During a survey, a Techniko Group electrician scans your switchboards, distribution boards, connections and electrical equipment while they’re running under normal load. Hot spots show up instantly on the thermal image — a loose terminal glowing against its neighbours, a breaker running hotter than its twin, a phase carrying more than its share.

Why is my insurer asking for a thermographic survey?

Electrical faults are one of the leading causes of commercial building fires, and most of them develop as heat long before they ignite. Many insurers now request periodic thermal scans of switchboards as evidence that this risk is being actively managed. Our reports are prepared with this in mind — clear findings, images, severity ratings and documented rectification — so you can forward them straight to your broker or insurer.

No — quite the opposite. Thermal imaging works best when equipment is running under normal or peak load, because that’s when faults generate the heat we’re looking for. Your operations continue completely uninterrupted while we scan. The only physical intervention is safely removing board covers where needed, which our licensed electricians handle as part of the survey.

For most commercial and industrial sites, an annual survey is the standard rhythm, and it’s what many insurers expect. Sites with heavy electrical loads, ageing infrastructure or critical uptime requirements — manufacturing plants, cold storage, data rooms — often benefit from six-monthly scans. We’ll recommend a frequency based on your site’s risk profile, not a one-size-fits-all schedule.

A written report containing side-by-side thermal and standard photographs of each item scanned, measured temperatures, a severity rating for every anomaly found, and prioritised recommendations — from “monitor at next survey” through to “repair urgently.” It’s designed to be equally useful to your facility manager, your insurer and the electrician doing the repairs.

A camera can find a hot spot; it takes an electrician to understand it and fix it. Because Techniko Group’s surveys are performed by licensed A-Grade electricians, we can safely open live boards, correctly interpret what the thermal patterns mean electrically, quote the repair on the spot and complete it — then re-scan to verify. With a scan-only provider, you’d still need to bring in an electrician afterwards anyway.
