Testing & Tagging in Melbourne & Victoria

Every kettle, power tool, extension lead and monitor in your workplace is a potential electrical hazard. Techniko group tests and tags portable appliances to AS/NZS 3760, keeping your equipment safe, your records tidy and your workplace safety obligations covered.

OVERVIEW

Small appliances cause big problems — unless someone’s checking them.

Testing and tagging is the routine inspection and electrical testing of portable, plug-in equipment — everything from power tools and extension leads to kitchen appliances, IT equipment and power boards. each item gets a visual inspection for damage, then electrical tests using a portable appliance tester, and finally a durable tag showing when it was tested and when it’s due again.

The process is set out in AS/NZS 3760, the australian standard for in-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment. Under workplace health and safety laws, employers must ensure electrical equipment is safe to use — and a documented test and tag program is the recognised, practical way to demonstrate that duty is being met.

Techniko group provides testing and tagging across metropolitan melbourne and regional victoria, from small offices with a few dozen items to industrial sites with thousands.

Tested, Tagged & Recorded

What We Do

Services included for Testing & Tagging

A tag is only the visible part. Behind every one is a proper inspection, an electrical test and a record you can produce later.

Visual Inspection

Every item is checked for damaged leads, cracked casings, bent pins, exposed conductors and unsafe or non-compliant repairs — the faults a machine can’t always detect but eyes can.

Electrical Testing

Testing with a calibrated portable appliance tester — earth continuity, insulation resistance, polarity and leakage — to confirm each item is electrically sound, not just intact.

Durable Tagging

Passed items receive a compliant tag showing the test date, next due date and who tested it — so anyone on site can see an item’s status at a glance.

Asset Register & Reports

A full register of every item tested — pass/fail results, locations and due dates — delivered as a report for your OHS records, auditors and insurers.

Faulty Item Management

Failed items are tagged out of service and reported immediately. As licenced electricians, we can often repair minor electrical faults on the spot.

Scheduled Retest Programs

We track every item’s due date and return automatically at the right interval for each environment — so compliance renews itself without anyone chasing it.

Who Needs It

If your people plug it in, it should be tested and tagged

Testing frequency depends on how harsh the environment is — equipment on a construction site needs checking far more often than a monitor in a quiet office. We’ll set the right schedule for each area of your workplace.

Construction & Trade Sites

The harshest environment for electrical equipment, and the most frequently tested — typically every three months. untagged tools can get you turned away at site induction, so we keep crews compliant and working.

Factories, Warehouses & Workshops

Power tools, machinery leads, chargers and workshop equipment take daily punishment. Regular testing catches damaged leads and failing insulation before they injure someone.

Offices & Retail

Computers, monitors, chargers, kitchen appliances and the power boards multiplying under every desk. Lower risk means longer test intervals — but the obligation to test doesn’t disappear just because the environment is carpeted.

Schools, Childcare & Care Facilities

Classrooms, kitchens, therapy equipment and cleaning appliances used around children and vulnerable people. We test during holidays, after hours or quiet periods so programs aren’t disrupted.

How It Works

In, Tested, Tagged and Out — with Minimal Disruption.

Most items are out of service for less than a minute each. We work around your team, your shifts and your busiest hours.

1

Scope & Schedule

We estimate your item count, agree the areas to cover and book a time that suits — including after hours for busy sites.

2

Inspect & Test

Each appliance is visually inspected and electrically tested in place, one workstation or work area at a time, so your team keeps working.

3

Tag & Report Faults

Passed items are tagged with test and due dates. Failed items are removed from service and flagged to you straight away with repair options.

4

Register & Retest Reminders

You receive a complete asset register and report, and we schedule the next round automatically based on each area’s required interval.

FAQs

Test and Tag Questions, Answered.
Is testing and tagging a legal requirement?

Workplace health and safety laws require employers and businesses to ensure electrical equipment in the workplace is safe and maintained. Testing and tagging to AS/NZS 3760 is the recognised way to meet and demonstrate that duty — and in some industries, such as construction, regular tagging is explicitly expected and enforced at site level. In practical terms, if an untested appliance injures someone, the absence of a test and tag program is very hard to defend.

It depends on the environment. Construction and demolition sites are typically every three months; factories and workshops more often than offices; low-risk office equipment may be every one to five years. AS/NZS 3760 sets recommended intervals, and we’ll map the right schedule to each area of your workplace.

Any portable, plug-in electrical equipment with a flexible lead — power tools, extension leads, power boards, kettles and appliances, chargers, monitors and IT gear. Fixed wiring isn’t part of test and tag (that’s covered by an electrical safety check), but almost anything you plug into a socket is.

It’s tagged out of service and reported to you straight away so it can’t be used. Because we’re licensed electricians, we can often repair a simple fault — like a damaged lead or plug — on the spot; otherwise we flag it for replacement.

Barely noticeable. Each item is out of use for under a minute, we work area by area, and we can schedule after hours or during quiet periods for busy sites. your team keeps working while we move through.

New equipment is generally considered safe to use out of the box and doesn’t need a full test straight away, but best practice is to fit a tag recording its introduction date so it enters your retest schedule. We’ll add new items to your asset register so nothing is missed later.
