Testing and tagging is the routine inspection and electrical testing of portable, plug-in equipment — everything from power tools and extension leads to kitchen appliances, IT equipment and power boards. Each item gets a visual inspection for damage, then electrical tests using a portable appliance tester, and finally a durable tag showing when it was tested and when it’s due again.
The process is set out in AS/NZS 3760, the Australian standard for in-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment. Under workplace health and safety laws, employers must ensure electrical equipment is safe to use — and a documented test and tag program is the recognised, practical way to demonstrate that duty is being met. If an incident ever occurs, your test records are the first thing a regulator or insurer will ask for.

Workplace health and safety laws require employers and businesses to ensure electrical equipment in the workplace is safe and properly maintained. Testing and tagging to AS/NZS 3760 is the recognised standard method of meeting and demonstrating that obligation — and in some industries, such as construction, regular tagging is explicitly expected and enforced at site level. Practically speaking: if an untested appliance injures someone, the absence of a test and tag program is very difficult to defend.
It depends on the environment, because that’s what determines how quickly equipment degrades. As a general guide under AS/NZS 3760: construction and demolition sites are typically tested every three months, factories and workshops around every six to twelve months, and lower-risk office environments at longer intervals. Different areas of the same business can be on different schedules — we’ll map the right interval to each part of your site.
Broadly, anything portable with a plug: power tools, extension leads, power boards, computers and monitors, chargers, kitchen appliances, cleaning equipment, workshop machinery leads and portable RCDs. Fixed, hard-wired equipment isn’t covered by test and tag — that’s inspected under your electrical safety check instead, which is why many clients bundle the two services into a single visit.
It’s immediately tagged out of service and reported to you — a failed item must not stay in use. From there you have options: many faults, like damaged plugs or leads, are economically repairable, and because our technicians are backed by licensed electricians we can often fix them on the spot and retest. Genuinely unsafe items are condemned, and everything is documented in your register either way.

For sites where any interruption matters, we test outside operating hours, between shifts or during shutdown periods.
New equipment doesn’t need electrical testing before first use — it’s deemed new to service — but under AS/NZS 3760 it should still be visually inspected and tagged with a “new to service” record so it enters your register and gets a due date for its first full test. We handle this as part of your program, so new purchases don’t silently fall through the compliance cracks.
